Check out Little Lovely Things written by Maureen Joyce Connolly!!

Published April 2, 2019!!

Synopsis

Meet Claire Rawlings. She chose the wrong time to get sick. While on the highway, on her way to drop off the kids at daycare so she can get to work as a medical resident, Claire does not have time for the nausea that is beginning to overtake her. Getting more nauseated by the minute, Claire’s world suddenly turns sideways causing her to stop at a gas station, run to the bathroom and pass out. While this is alarming in itself, Claire’s two young daughters are sleeping in the back seat of the car when Claire passes out. Claire wakes up just a few minutes later, but her car and THE KIDS are gone!!!

The police are called, but they have no leads as to who took Claire’s daughters let alone where they could be. As each hour, then day passes with no word on the girls, guilt presses down on Claire. While feeling guilty about her missing children, Claire tries to hold onto her strained marriage.

But then, a witness comes forward…a potentially unreliable witness. But Claire clings to the hope that her daughters are out there somewhere and this man may know where.

Taken from the book jacket itself: “Little Lovely Things is the story of a family shattered by unthinkable tragedy, and the unexpected intersection of heartbreak and hope.”

Book Spotlight and Partial Review: A Woman of Substance

I was alerted to this book, A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford, after Suzy, from Suzy Approved Book Tours sent out an email about the 40th anniversary of this book. I honestly had never heard of this author or the book. I am so glad that Suzy told me about this book!!!

Synopsis

Meet Emma Harte – the iron-willed force behind a thriving international enterprise. Growing up, Emma lived in poverty until she honed her skills, learned to survive, became a woman, and vowed to make her mark on the world.

As one of the richest women in the world, Emma has everything that she could ever want…except, the one man she could never have. Emma’s life has taken her through 2 marriages, 2 wars, and generations of secrets as well as numerous successes. As Emma gets older, greed and envy consume those who are the closest to her. Now Emma finds herself in the position of needing to outwit her enemies and face her past in the same way she built her empire. Will Emma be able to do it or will everything Emma has built come crashing down around her?

Review

While I did not have a chance to finish the entire book before this post was due, what I did read was wonderful. Barbara Taylor Bradford does a fantastic job of introducing the characters of the book in a wonderfully descriptive way – in a way that lets you picture them in your mind’s eye perfectly. In addition, while this story jumps time periods, Barbara does a good job letting you know exactly what time period you are in. Finally, I really enjoyed the style of writing Barbara Taylor Bradford has. Her writing style pulls you into the story and allows you to see the the story from each of the characters point of views.

While I did not have time to finish this book, I will for sure continue to read it as I can’t wait to see what happens!!

Summary

When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down.

A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran’s counselor, is caught up in the chase.

Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa’s patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers gets there first, leading to Darfield’s dramatic capture.

Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge?

Excerpt

Bruntfield, New Jersey, just another banal town in a part of the country that nobody thinks about, was about to become famous; or rather, more aptly put, infamous. People sauntered past lackluster shops unaware that in a few days, the lackadaisical streets would bear the rabid frustrations that divided the nation; a pus-like bitterness that was held in check by the demands of everyday survival and the distractions offered by obsessive consumerism and brazen media.

Some would inevitably blame the cascade of events on the weather, since the origins could be found on a hot summer day in 2006. Sure, just about all summer days are hot, but this one was close to the record, and humid to boot. By the end of July, the Northeast coast was suffering under a sweltering heat wave. Despite the humidity, no one could remember the last time it had rained. A hundred-year drought was predicted, they’d said.

Bruntfield, among the many places under this curse, had its water supply so severely depressed that the city authorities were forced to impose water rationing. As if that wasn’t enough, the excessive load on air conditioners led to incessant brownouts. With the weather nothing less than insufferable, suffocating, oppressive, even provoking, tempers flared along with the temperature. But the local situation, as bad as it was, was about to get worse.
